Sonochemistry and sonoluminescence in ionic liquids, molten salts, and concentrated electrolyte solutions

چکیده
Ionic liquids have favorable intrinsic properties that make them of interest as solvents for various chemical reactions. The same properties that make the liquids effective solvents also make them interesting liquids for studies involving sonochemistry, acoustic cavitation, and sonoluminescence. Recent interest in using ultrasound to accelerate chemical reactions conducted in ionic liquids necessitates an understanding of the effects of acoustic cavitation on these solvents. Here, we review our previous results on the effects of cavitation on some room-temperature ionic liquids, including the sonoluminescence spectra of molten salt eutectics and concentrated aqueous electrolyte solutions. In all cases, regardless of the essentially nonexistent vapor pressure of the solution atomic and small molecule emitters are observed in the spectra which arise from sonolysis of the ionic liquids. 2005 Elsevier B.V. Sonochemistry and sonoluminescence of room-temperature ionic liquids.
The sonication of ionic organic liquids leads to decomposition of the liquids. Multibubble sonoluminescence spectra and headgas analysis reveal a variety of decomposition products from the sonolysis of N,N'-dialkylimidazolium ionic liquids. The decomposition is a result of acoustic cavitation, which generates localized hot spots from the implosive collapse of bubbles in the ionic liquids. Despi...
متن کاملLipid Bilayer Formation in Aqueous Solutions of Ionic Liquids
The formation of lipid bilayers between ionic liquid droplets is presented as a new means of forming functional bimolecular networks. Ionic liquids are molten salts that have a number of interesting properties, such as the ability to be a liquid at room temperature and exceedingly low vapor pressure. Our research demonstrates that it is possible to consistently and repeatable form lipid bilayer...
متن کاملSuppressing the dendritic growth of zinc in an ionic liquid containing cationic and anionic zinc complexes for battery applications.
Metallic zinc is a promising negative electrode for high energy rechargeable batteries due to its abundance, low-cost and non-toxic nature. However, the formation of dendritic zinc and low Columbic efficiency in aqueous alkaline solutions during charge/discharge processes remain a great challenge. Here we demonstrate that the dendritic growth of zinc can be effectively suppressed in an ionic li...
متن کاملElectrode/electrol Yte Interfaces: Structure and Kinetics of Charge Transfer
When a metal is partly immersed in an electrolyte, a potential is set up across the two phases, i.e., at the electrode/electrolyte interface. The phases may be solids (metals or alloys, semiconductors, insulators), liquids (ionic liquids, molten salts, neutral solutions), or gases (polar or non polar). The more common terminology in electrochemistry is that a double layer is set up at the inter...
متن کاملCriteria for solvate ionic liquids.
Certain concentrated mixtures of salts and solvents are not simply "solutions" anymore, but they may be described as "ionic liquids". In this perspective paper, we describe possible criteria for the new family of ionic liquids: "solvate" ionic liquids. This subclass of ionic liquids was originally proposed by Angell et al. in their recent review; however, their criteria remain to be debated. Co...
